Our Vision

The Hong Kong Institute of Jingjiao Studies (HKIJS) envisions a world in which the study of ancient Chinese Christianity, including Jingjiao as one of its most historically significant expressions, is recognised as a vital field of historical, cultural, and theological inquiry, integral to understanding both the history of Christianity as a whole, and the intellectual traditions of China.

By “ancient,” HKIJS refers to the period prior to early modern missionary movements, and by “ancient Chinese Christianity,” we refer to Christianity as historically expressed within the geographical area of present-day China. Within this scope, the Institute advances rigorous academic research through interdisciplinary approaches spanning history, theology, epigraphy, manuscript studies, archaeology, linguistics, and comparative religious and cultural studies.

HKIJS seeks to uncover, document, and analyse manuscripts, inscriptions, archaeological materials, and historical sites; to publish and disseminate high-quality research through scholarly publications and digital resources; and to foster dialogue through conferences, seminars, lectures, and collaborative initiatives open to scholars and the wider public. Working in partnership with universities, research institutes, libraries, museums, and cultural organisations in Hong Kong and beyond, HKIJS promotes informed public engagement with the historical, cultural, and intellectual significance of Christianity in China.
