Hong Kong Institute of Jingjiao Studies

The Hong Kong Institute of Jingjiao Studies is an independent research institute devoted to the interdisciplinary study of Jingjiao (景教) — the ancient manifestation of Christianity in China. Founded in Hong Kong, the Institute seeks to advance critical scholarship on the cultural, linguistic, and theological encounters between Christianity and the Chinese world from the Tang dynasty onward.

HKIJS promotes research in five principal areas: epigraphy, manuscript studies, theology, linguistics, and archaeology.
Through academic publications, on-site and online workshops, and digital database projects, the Institute seeks to make the textual and material heritage of ancient Chinese Christianity accessible to both scholars and the wider public.

It also fosters dialogue between the academic community and Christian traditions that trace continuity with Jingjiao, situating this field within the broader history of world Christianity and Chinese civilization.

By combining historical research, philology, and theological reflection, HKIJS seeks to illuminate the complex legacy of the Luminous/Auspicious Religion and its enduring significance for dialogue between East and West.
